Garden tasks

September:

Week 1: National Hedgerow Week

Nature walk along a local hedgerow, taste some blackberries, look at other berries, nuts and seeds. Talk about plant folklore and how hedges are safe corridors for most of our biodiversity.

Week 2: Sow some Winter greens

There are lots of seeds that can still be sown in September. We sowed Pak Choi, Japanese Greens and a Lettuce mix in Week 2.

Week 3: Collect seeds

We collected seeds from Purple Mallow,  Chamomile and Lupins that had been left to go to seed. All of the seeds look very different. We sowed some and saved some in paper bags for later.

Some of last week's seeds have already sprouted.

Nature Journals
We also used all of our senses to explore the garden and started Nature Journals to record what we find.

Week 4: Rosehip syrup

We collected rosehips last week and put them in the freezer as they are meant to be better after a frost. Rosehips have 20 times more Vitamin C per weight than oranges. We are making a syrup which is great for coughs and colds over winter, and also delicious on ice-cream.
